About courtney
At the age of 8, Alexander dribbled his way onto the basketball court and never looked back. Year after year, his drive and desire for the game continued to grow. He could be found daily playing on the concrete of outdoor playgrounds or the wood flooring of his local Connecticut Boy’s Club, “The Sheehan Center”. This intense focus and relentless commitment to improve placed him among the nation’s elite high school basketball players. In 1995, Alexander was a Second Team Parade All- American while also becoming North Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.
From there, Alexander earned a scholarship to The University of Virginia, where he achieved various basketball honors including Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Rookie Team and All ACC Honorable-Mention. Eventually, Alexander transferred to California State University at Fresno where he garnered many basketball accolades. Alexander succeeded in becoming the Nation’s Leading Scorer in 2000. This made him the first player in the history of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) to accomplish this feat. In addition, he was selected as a Second Team All American by the Associated Press while also becoming WAC Player of the Year.
Alexander was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2000 NBA Draft (13th overall). Due to poor attitude, he was traded to the Washington Wizards in the middle of his rookie year. While playing with the Wizards, he was selected to the All-Rookie Second Team while also being recognized as the NBA’s Schick Rookie of the Month in April of 2001.
During his second year in the NBA, Alexander played alongside Michael Jordan whom he regarded as the greatest player to ever play basketball. Unfortunately, Alexander’s poor attitude resurfaced and it became an unenjoyable experience for both he and Jordan. He was then subsequently traded to the New Orleans Hornets for the upcoming season.
Alexander spent the next two seasons of his NBA career with the Hornets. Unfortunately, in his second season with the Hornets, his professional NBA career was abruptly derailed by a ruptured Achilles tendon. Alexander’s fifth season was spent with the Sacramento Kings but was cut short due to popped tendons in the bottom of his opposite foot.
Through these injuries God began to humble Alexander and turn his focus and energy to transforming the landscape of basketball. He has since decided to dedicate his efforts into cleaning up the “culture” surrounding the game. With his wife, he co-founded CJA Sports, a consulting firm focusing on areas that plagues the game (i.e. athlete entitlement, the misguided treatment of young athletes by coaches and parents, domestic violence/sexual assault and healthy relationships, infidelity in pro sports, and the ‘staying eligible’ theory).
He currently serves as a Consultant for the NBA and NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) while also serving as the Development and Outreach Associate for Breakthrough Atlanta. In addition, Courtney is a College Basketball TV Analyst and a Manager at an independently owned Anytime Fitness Gym in Mabelton, GA.
He is a husband to Joi’el Alexander and father of three, Courtney II, a student at Tennessee Tech University, and younger adolescent twins Cameron and Ciara.
